Sarvam, the Bengaluru AI company, has signed a five-year agreement to build AI applications for the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. The deal is a memorandum of understanding (MoU), which sets a framework for projects. Public reports do not describe a delivered system, a contract value or a timeline.
Here is what is on the record. Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS), the tri-service coordinating body under the Ministry of Defence, announced the MoU on X on 26 October 2026. Sarvam published its own statement on 27 October. ThePrint reports that Sarvam co-founder Pratyush Kumar and Air Marshal Tejinder Singh, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff, signed it in New Delhi.
One detail needs care. Some early reports said the Ministry of Defence itself signed. On 28 October Sarvam added a clarification to its statement: the MoU was executed with HQ IDS, an organisation under the Ministry of Defence. Headlines that say the armed forces "employ" Sarvam or signed a "contract" go further than that wording. Sarvam describes the MoU as an umbrella framework, and YourStory notes it is not an announcement of a single deployed system.
According to Sarvam, it will design, develop and deploy AI applications for the operational, training and decision-support needs of the three Services, and provide follow-on technical support. HQ IDS will facilitate the engagement. The Services and joint organisations are to share the same foundation models, agentic infrastructure, and geospatial and perception systems. HQ IDS's post lists AI applications, research, knowledge management, training and decision-support as areas of collaboration.
Sarvam names the focus areas as decision support, target acquisition and data fusion across what it calls the sensor-to-shooter loop, the chain from detecting a target to engaging it. It says human oversight will be retained on operational decisions. That is Sarvam's description of the plan. Nothing public shows how the oversight will work in practice.
The work will be carried out by Chanakya, which Sarvam calls its firewalled division for national security and defence. It was announced on 29 March 2026. Chanakya will use Sarvam's AI stack, including the Sarvam 105B model. Sarvam says the AI layer will be built in India and run on sovereign infrastructure.
What has not been disclosed: the financial terms, the number of projects, and any deployment timeline, according to ThePrint. No project has been named other than Sarvam's mention of an "AI fabric" connecting elements of India's defence capabilities.
What this means: Sarvam now has a formal route into defence work across all three Services, which is a strong signal for an Indian foundation-model company. But an MoU is the start of a relationship, not proof of revenue or of AI in service. Watch for named projects, contract values and any government statement on safeguards.
