One Planet Partners has launched its maiden private equity fund with backing from Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, targeting about Rs 3,000 crore of deployment in Indian growth businesses. The partnership was announced on October 29. The target is not a completed Rs 3,000 crore fundraise: The Economic Times reported that a first close is planned by mid-2027.
The strategy focuses on energy transition, mobility and manufacturing. One Planet said it would provide scale-up capital of Rs 100-500 crore to mid-market businesses with revenues of Rs 200-2,000 crore. This is growth capital for established businesses, rather than a seed fund aimed at companies still searching for an initial market.
SMTB's own October 29 disclosure confirms an investment in One Planet Partners and a strategic partnership. It separately says the bank has agreed to establish a dedicated Separately Managed Account, or SMA, managed by One Planet. The bank's disclosure does not state an investment amount. An investment in the manager, an SMA and the wider fund's deployment target should not be treated as interchangeable figures.
Founded in Mumbai in 2024, One Planet's founding team includes Mukund Rajan, Bobby Pauly, Mrinalini Mirchandani and Sheetal Thakkar. Mint's interview with the partners describes a focus on the gap between early-stage growth capital and large buyout funds. The firm has already invested in Yulu as part of its Series C round; the full round size is not the size of One Planet's own cheque.
FundForge Insight: an institutional anchor can help a new manager build credibility, but the next evidence is execution. Track the actual first close, subsequent capital commitments and investments in companies that fit the stated mandate. For founders, the revenue and cheque ranges are a useful filter: a mid-market private equity strategy is not a promise of funding for every climate or mobility startup.
