Verghese Kurien arrived in Anand, Gujarat, in 1949 on a government posting he didn't want.

He stayed to help farmers fight a private dairy monopoly, co-founding what became Amul — and went on to lead Operation Flood, transforming India into the world's largest milk producer.

The Story

Born in Kozhikode, Kerala, in 1921, Kurien earned a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Madras before completing a government-sponsored master's degree in mechanical/metallurgical engineering at Michigan State University.

He was sent to Anand, Gujarat, in May 1949 to serve out a mandatory service bond at a small government research creamery, a posting he had little enthusiasm for.

There, he encountered Tribhuvandas Patel, a Gandhian activist organizing local dairy farmers against Polson Dairy, the district's only private dairy, which was underpaying farmers and blocking them from selling milk independently.

Rather than leave once his bond ended, Kurien chose to help build a farmer-owned alternative.

In December 1949, the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union was formed — later renamed Amul. Kurien went on to become founding chairman of the National Dairy Development Board in 1965, and in 1970 launched Operation Flood, the world's largest dairy development program, which replicated the farmer-cooperative "Anand Model" across India over subsequent decades.

He also founded the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) in 1979 to professionalize cooperative management.
